Is placenta encapsulation safe? Are there any negative side effects or risks?
Placenta encapsulation is safe when performed by a skilled, trained and experienced specialist. Risks include: potential cross-contamination if the wrong type of equipment is used or equipment is not properly disinfected. Possible negative side effects are reported rarely but include: headache, too much energy or insomnia, stomach ache or oversupply of breastmilk. Typically negative side effects can be managed by tweaking the dose.
How do I know which method is right for me?
My clients report positive results from all methods of preparation. For the average woman, I tend to recommend the Raw Encapsulation Method simply because they provide significantly more pills than the Steamed method. If you are very sensitive to iron or hormone supplementation then the Steamed preparation method may be a better fit despite the lower pill yield. If meconium is present at birth, or if you test positive for GBS or Bacterial Vaginosis, Steamed Encapsulation is required.
How do you sanitize your equipment?
I use disposable items when possible. Everything else is scrubbed with hot soapy water, rinsed, then immersed in an EPA approved, hospital grade disinfectant for 20 minutes, then rinsed again and dried.
Will you encapsulate my placenta in my home?
Absolutely! Home preparation is optional and I bring all equipment and supplies. Your kitchen surfaces are left fully sanitized when I leave. If you are not sure which preparation location is best for you, click here for more information on your options!
How should I handle my placenta before it is encapsulated?
Refrigerate the placenta as soon as possible after the birth. If a refrigerator is not available, place the placenta in a cooler on ice. If for some reason you do not want me to pick up the placenta within the first 4 days, double ziplock bag it and freeze it.
I have my placenta in my freezer. Will you still encapsulate it?
Yes, I will encapsulate a placenta up to one year after the birth. As long at it was properly handled and kept frozen the hormones should remain viable.
How many capsules will I get from my placenta?
This depends on the size, weight, health of the placenta, and method used. The average number of capsules is 150..
